Tell us about your career:
I am a Greensboro, NC native with over 19 years of experience in property management. I started as a leasing agent with no experience and quickly worked my way up to a property manager overseeing a portfolio. In this industry, evolution is fast so I had to do everything I could to keep up. Let me tell you it wasn't easy. However, through dedication and even some hardships, I managed to accomplish a lot. Including Two Property Manager of the Year awards, Three Property of the Year awards, and 4/5 apartment designations NAA offers (CAPS, CAM. NALP, CAMT). In 2016, I acquired my NC real estate licenses and BIC status and most recently opened my own Real Estate firm in 2022. I am also actively involved in several committees with PTAA and co-chairing the education committee. Knowledge is power and I crave it. I am currently working on faciliatory classes so I can help others gain the knowledge and navigate the crazy world of Property Management.
What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:
Work life balance is everything! It is difficult to do especially if you are new to the industry but I promise you the work will be there tomorrow. Take care of your mental health and reach out and find mentors to guide you along the way. Learn as much as possible and don't move up faster than you are ready, there will be another position available when the time is right. Find the passion in the work. You have to love what you do and that can get lost in this busy world. However, the coolest part of this industry is that your day is different everyday and the networking is so much fun! Join a local apartment association. It will open up all kinds of doors for you, while making some life long friendships. Property Management isn't just a job for most of us, its a career. There are so many positions and talents that are needed in this industry and if you love what you do and work hard, you can go far.
