Tell us about your career:
I started in the industry as an in-house painter in April of 1998 in Cary, North Carolina. I quickly got bored of doing the same thing every day and looked for a change. I noticed the maintenance team dealt with different situations every day and that appealed to me. I was able to move over to an entry-level technician with zero experience and I mean zero! I set my goal to be a regional maintenance supervisor and never looked back. I worked my way up and reached that goal at 29 years old but I wasn't finished. I had to set new goals since I achieved what I wanted and Director was next. I worked on my skillset and grew in areas to become the Director of Service and Safety at Grubb Properties in September of 2015 and have been for the past 7 years.
What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:
If I can do it so can you! I started with no experience in the field and just worked hard to obtain my goals. The best advice I can give is to be a sponge. Listen and absorb knowledge as much as you can. Then take the initiative and do those things on your own without your supervisor or manager telling you to. I would also say set goals and remind everyone what they are. The manager, supervisor, and regional need to know so they can help you gain the skills to achieve them. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions! You can't grow if you don't know!
