Tell us about your career:
My property management career started in 1992 after five years in restaurant management. I got a leasing position at the apartment community where I lived and soon realized I LOVED it! Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working onsite as a leasing manager as well as community manager, at the corporate level in marketing and training, a few years at my local apartment association as the Education Director, and now on the vendor side as a relationship manager for Impact Property Solutions.
In my current role, I am face to face with customers every day. I provide support to both our retail reps as well as multifamily. I try to prevent problems but when one does arise, I make sure it’s taken care of. I help with realtor fairs and trade shows. I am on multiple committees at both the local and state levels. I absolutely love that I do not have an office and that no two days are alike. Bored I am NOT! And I am still learning, each and every day.
I am also newly on the PTAA Board of Directors. It’s been a great 30 years and I have no plans on slowing down π
What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:
Be genuine and sincere. Say what you mean and do what you say you are going to do. Answer your phone-whether you work onsite or are a vendor-answer your phone, even when you know the person on the other line may not be happy with you or a circumstance. Offer solutions-everything can be fixed somehow. Though we take our customers and their flooring needs very seriously, when things get stressful (think college turns) we have a saying in our office, “it’s just flooring, not brain surgery. We got this” And for heavens sake-don’t burn bridges. I promise you, you never know who may be your next co-worker, customer, or boss. I am living proof of this!
Anything else you would like to share:
Over the years, I have obtained my NALP (now CALP), CAM, and CAPS designations. I have been part of winning the PTAA’s vendor partner of the year numerous times and personally, received the President’s Choice award for very simply being myself and doing what I love. I have met many amazing people in this field that have added to both my personal and professional growth. I’ve had many amazing mentors and people in my corner over the years and now I feel it’s my turn to pay it forward. I LOVE when people contact me for advice. I’d love the opportunity to help anyone who wants to further their property management career.
This business truly is all about its relationships and I have been blessed beyond measure with some of the best.
